Ship's Bells

In the age of sail the Ship's Bell was a very important thing on a ship. The bell was used to signal the change of watches, the meal times, etc.

Today all larger boats and ships are required to have a bell by USCG regulations to warn other vessels during fog or poor visibility weather. All bells on larger ships are engraved with the name of the vessel and a date. The picture at the left is the large bronze bell aboard the USS Constellation, Inner Harbor, Baltimore, Maryland
