The Bodie Island lighthouse was built in 1872 and stands 156' tall on Roanoke Sound on the Outer Banks.

A note of interest concerning lighthouses and the hand made "Fresnel" lenses. Each lighthouse lens was hand made and would give a signal in code as it rotated. Each rotating signal was different and sailors know the code of every light and recognize that lighthouse by it's code.
